Highlights:

  • Fingerprints and a federal criminal background checks are required.
  • Submitting the application for licensure by examination does NOT register you for the NCLEX. Applicants must register and pay separately for the exam by going to: www.pearsonvue.com.

As part of the application process, you must:

  • Register with Pearson Vue to take the NCLEX exam. You must do this before sending in the licensure application.
  • Request that your nursing school submit a Michigan Nursing School Certification Form directly to the Board of Nursing. Out-of-State applicants must request final, official transcripts to be sent from their school directly to the Board of Nursing. Faxing transcripts to the Board is NOT acceptable.
  • Submit the application form along with the fee and any additional supporting documents.
  • Make an appointment to have your fingerprints taken. Fingerprints may be taken electronically or with ink. Schedule your fingerprints to be taken 7-10 business days after you have mailed your application. To find locations or vendors where fingerprints can be obtained go here: Private Livescan Vendors. If you will be submitting electronic fingerprints, be sure to bring the Livescan Fingerprint Request Form to the vendor.

Licensing Process

Once the application, fee, fingerprints, and supporting documents have been reviewed, the Board will determine if you are eligible to test.

If you are eligible to take the NCLEX, you will receive an authorization to test (ATT) and instructions on scheduling the test.

When passing NCLEX results are received by the board, a license will be issued.

About Temporary Permits:
The Michigan Board of Nursing only issues temporary licenses to nurses seeking licensure by endorsement.

Special Accommodations:
If you require special testing accommodations because of a disability, you must submit a letter that indicates what your disability is and what type of accommodations you are requesting.

You must also send a letter from a licensed health care provider stating your diagnosis and providing copies of supporting test findings and/or evaluations.

You should also send documentation from your nursing program describing any accommodations provided to you during your education.
