Highlights:

  • Application forms for the state of Nevada are submitted on paper.
  • Fingerprints and a criminal background check are required.
  • All applicants must have a valid Social Security Number.
  • The state of Nevada allows a third party to act on your behalf during the licensure process. This is done by submitting a notarized Third Party Authorization Form, which is included in the application packet.
  • Submitting the application for licensure by examination does NOT register you for the NCLEX. Applicants must register and pay separately for the exam by going to: www.pearsonvue.com.

As part of the application process, you must:

  • Register with Pearson Vue to take the NCLEX exam.
  • Have your fingerprints taken. This will initiate the criminal background check process.
  • Request that an official final transcript from your nursing school be forwarded to the Board of Nursing office. The transcript must be sent to the Board directlyfrom the school of nursing.
  • Submit the paper application along with the fee, fingerprint cards and fingerprint processing fee, and any supporting documents. DO NOT submit any supporting documents before sending in the application form. They will be rejected.

About the Fingerprinting Process:
If you request an application packet by mail, the fingerprint card will be included in the materials you receive. If you download the application form the website, you must contact the board and request a fingerprint card.

Only the exact fingerprint cards issued by the Board will be accepted.

Take the fingerprint card to a location such as a UPS center or a local law enforcement agency and have them take your fingerprints. The Board will also take your fingerprints by appointment only. Any payment required for having your fingerprints taken by a vendor is your responsibility.

Once you have been fingerprinted, fill out the Fingerprint Submission Form that is included in the application packet and send it to the Board along with your fingerprint card and a processing fee of $51.25.

If you reside in Nevada you have the option of having your fingerprints taken electronically at a Livescan location and have them directly sent to the Board. If you choose this option you are responsible for the fingerprinting fee charged by the Livescan vendor.

Applicants who have their fingerprints take electronically should still submit the Fingerprint Submission Form that is included in the application packet along with a receipt of the fingerprinting transaction.

Licensing Process

    • Once the application, supporting documents, and criminal background report have been received, the Board will determine if you are eligible to test.
    • When you have been notified that you are eligible to test, you may schedule your examination. You have 90 days to complete the examination.
    • Once passing test results are reported to the Board of Nursing, a license will be issued. NO paper licenses will be mailed out. Applicants may access their licenses online at the Nevada Board of Nursing website.

About Temporary Permits:

If you would like to receive a temporary or interim permit, which allows you to practice as a graduate nurse (G.N.) while awaiting NCLEX results, your school must send the Board an Affidavit of Graduation.

Once the Board has received the application, fees and documentation, and the Affidavit of Graduation, it will issue the permit. Interim permits are valid for 90 days and are non-renewable.
